SF Beer Week Suggestions for Wednesday



Beer Week hump day will be awash in beer and beer-related events, including a charity event for the seasonal Pliny the Younger at Monk’s Kettle and Pliny the Younger and IPA day at Rose and Crown in Palo Alto.

Oyster & Beer Extravaganza
For the fifth year, Magnolia is celebrating one of nature’s most perfect combinations: oysters and beer. The brewpub will release the latest batch of its legendary Oyster Stout, brewed with whole Hog Island oysters, as well as pour a curated selection of other oyster stouts. The special menu will include a variety of raw and cooked oysters from all over.

Anchor and Hope Annual Shrimp Boil
If you don’t get your fill of seafood at Magnolia, head down to Anchor and Hope for all the shrimp you can eat. Local beer from Headlands Brewing, Calicraft, Thirsty Bear and Anchor Brewing. Two seatings, one at 5 p.m. and the second at 7 p.m.

Maine Night with Authentic Lobster Rolls
If lobster rolls are more your speed, head over to The Willows, which will overnight lobsters from Maine so you can be assured of their freshness. What better to pair with Maine lobster rolls than beer from Maine’s preeminent brewery, Allagash, including Midnight Brett, Grand Cru 2013, James Bean, Fluxus, Tripel, Confluence, Yakuza, Black, Curieux, Saison and White. Also on hand will be Shipyard Bourbon Barrel Aged Double ESB and Peak Organic. (Anything left over will be tapped the following day for half price.)

Massachusetts Night @ The Sycamore
Arrive early for this one. The Sycamore is wicked psyched to bring some rare brews from East Coast Massholes paired with New England chowdah. Also try out some Dunkin Donunts beer-tails. (Any beers left over will be tapped the following day for half price.)

21A Library Stash Tasting

Southern Exposure
Public House at AT&T Park will host beers from south of the ballpark, ranging from Speakeasy Massacre, all the way down to Golden Road Berliner Weisse, El Segundo Hyperion Stout, Craftsman Stone Fruit Sour, Monkey Paw Low and Slow Rauchbier, SCVB Almaden Red & Electric IPA, Lost Abbey Framboise, Monkish Anomaly and Firestone Walker XIV. Aquarium of the Bay + Pac Brew Lab = Octopalooza
Pacific Brewing Laboratory teams up with Aquarium of the Bay for Octopalooza. Sip on Pac Brew beers like Squid Ink, Nautilus, bourbon barrel aged Squid Ink, Belgian Pear and Super Tramp while watching squid dissections, octopus enrichment and squid block printing in the aquarium’s Bay Lab.

Midnight Sun Tap Takeover
Back by popular demand, Fat Angel is hosting the crew from Midnight Sun once again. This year’s lineup is a stellar selection of beers from this amazing brewery. On tap will be XXX, Berserker, Sex Machine, Pleasure Town, and a surprise beer TBD. We will be doing flights of all five beers so just swing on by, meet the crew, taste some beer, and marvel at the fact that these beers were brewed 3,500 miles to the North.

Peninsula/South Bay

Serpents & Stouts
For the second year in a row, Ale Arsenal will mingle live snakes with dark beers from its archives. Expect six to eight Burmese and reticulated pythons and stouts from Goose Island (Bourbon County goes on at 8), Hangar 24, Lost Abbey, Cellarmaker, Dogfish Head, Mikkeller, Drakes, Evil Twin, Stone, Allagash, Alesmith, Midnight Sun, Almanac and Highwater.

Beer Ice Cream
Smitten Ice Cream teams with local breweries Gordon Biersch, Strike Brewing, Knee Deep Brewing, Palo Alto Brewing and Almanac Brewing for beer-infused ice cream using flavors like Meyer Lemon, Gingersnap, Salted Caramel and Malted Vanilla. The ice cream will be made to order with liquid nitrogen with Smitten’s patented ice cream churner, Brrr. Only a small number of tickets will be available. Brewers and Smitten Founder Robyn Sue Fisher will be on hand.

Eclipse Night with FiftyFifty

Crux Fermentation Brewery Debut
The Crux Fermentation project was built by a community of beer lovers. Larry Sidor (formerly of Deschutes and responsible for Red Chair, Abyss, Dissident etc) is always in pursuit of the next great beer. This truly shows in the lineup of great brews this new brewery to the north is making. For the first time in the Bay Area we are happy to present a Crux fermentation debut event that will feature IPAs, DIPAs, Belgian styles, barrel-aged, and everything in between.

Belgian vs. American Farmhouse Ales
Saisons/Farmhouse Ales from Wallonia were something of an endangered species until American craft brewers re-discovered the crisp, hoppy rustic style. The Refuge will compare select classic Belgian saisons with a handful of saisons from American craft brewers. It’s a good opportunity to explore this increasingly popular, food-friendly style.

Cantillon Flight and Bottle Sale
Trappist Provisions will pour a flight of three beers from legendary Belgian lambic producer Cantillon, along with bottle sales. Expect these to go fast.

Prairie: Meet the Brewer
